Emma Banay (1989– )
No, Do Not, 1995
Ink on paper
Banay, a young follower of Dubuffet and active member of his Compagnie de l’Art Brut, produced this hitherto undisplayed ink drawing at age six. A seminal work from her juvenilia, No, Do Not is a distinctive juxtaposition of primitive form and stringent social commentary. A reaction to the times, the piece evokes retrograde Puritanism in an age still heavily entrenched in the drug culture of the 1980-1990s. The artist’s influences include D.A.R.E., Dubuffet, Sherlock Holmes, Panda and Blanket, John Calvin, and The Merry Drinker.
